What is a wife of noble character?
In my days leading up to becoming a wife I had so much to learn. Even after saying “ I do” I in fact DID NOT know what was ahead of me. Being a wife of noble character isn’t just a way of being but it also includes heart posture not to mention planning and discipline.
What is a wife of noble character though? What does she entail? Why is it important that I be one now or in the future? Glad you asked.
Let’s start with the definition of noble. In the context for which Proverbs 31 is read, The Oxford Dictionary defines the word noble as “having or showing fine personal qualities or high moral principles and ideas.” Think of someone that is righteous or virtuous.
It also defines character as the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.
So when scripture lays out a wife of noble character it is defining a wife that is most importantly, a believer/follower of Christ and also a woman that lives her life according to high moral principles distinctive to her as a woman of God.
Scriptures from the Book of Proverbs
What does scripture say specifically?
Proverbs 31 verses 10-31 (MSG) reads:
“A good woman is hard to find, and worth far more than diamonds.
Her husband trusts her without reserve, and never has reason to regret it. Never spiteful, she treats him generously all her life long. She shops around for the best yarns and cottons, and enjoys knitting and sewing. She’s like a trading ship that sails to faraway places and brings back exotic surprises. She’s up before dawn, preparing breakfast for her family and organizing her day. She looks over a field and buys it, then, with money she’s put aside, plants a garden. First thing in the morning, she dresses for work, rolls up her sleeves, eager to get started. She senses the worth of her work, is in no hurry to call it quits for the day. She’s skilled in the crafts of home and hearth, diligent in homemaking. She’s quick to assist anyone in need, reaches out to help the poor. She doesn’t worry about her family when it snows; their winter clothes are all mended and ready to wear. She makes her own clothing, and dresses in colorful linens and silks. Her husband is greatly respected when he deliberates with the city fathers. She designs gowns and sells them, brings the sweaters she knits to the dress shops. Her clothes are well-made and elegant, and she always faces tomorrow with a smile. When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say, and she always says it kindly. She keeps an eye on everyone in her household, and keeps them all busy and productive. Her children respect and bless her; her husband joins in with words of praise: “Many women have done wonderful things, but you’ve outclassed them all!” Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades. The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God. Give her everything she deserves! Adorn her life with praises!”

Now I don’t believe that this list is exhaustive. But when you look at these scriptures in totality, they really do speak to the heart of a wife, how she is trusted by her husband, the way she keeps her home, instructs her children, manages money and contributes, her demeanor and so much more.
The Simple Truth of it All
All of this is important because you are the daughter of the King who loves you dearly. As a daughter of the King, the King of Kings, might I add… reflecting the light of Christ as a wife through trustworthiness, order, contribution, kindness, love and a willing heart is not only beautiful but honoring in the eyes of the Lord. Yes. The Lord sees you and loooves when you show up each day as a reflection of Him. You know who else loves it? Your husband.
A wife of noble character is a blessing to her family and most importantly a reflection of Christ. As a wife, I can’t think of anything better to be. 🤎
